William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a brand new term for old methods of thinking. His lecture series, “Pragmatism – A New Name for Old Ways of Thinkin'” was a response to this. He began his lecture series by identifying a fundamental and seemingly unsolvable tension between two different ways of thinking in the hard-headed empiricist adherence to experience and relying on facts, and the soft-minded predisposition to a priori principles that appeals to rationalization.
